The latest range in hearing aids has just been launched by Starkey, a large American hearing aid manufacturer. The hearing aids come with Artificial Intelligence as standard (AI). AI means that the hearing aids can be adapted to do far more than just help you hear better.
They can be used to track your health, keeping score of the number of steps per day you take. They can be used for many other helpful extras, however our main interest lies in AI’s ability to enhance speech intelligibility.
Hearing speech in a noisy environment or in a group as we’ve mentioned before in these blogs, is the ultimate challenge faced by all hearing aid users. AI functions by sorting out unwanted background noise and focusing on speech. This is done automatically without the need to press buttons or use an app, something we really like.
Initial indications are very promising. We fitted our first pair a few days ago to an existing user of older Starkey technology and they reported that at a meeting they attended the next day there was a marked improvement in speech clarity. This really excites us, hearing in a group is so stressful for those with hearing impairment.
