Glossop, at the edge of the Peak District, was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Its thought the name derives from Glott’s Hop or Glott’s Valley. Glott was often the name of someone who farmed land in that area.
During the Industrial Revolution Glossop became renowned for cotton production.
Old Glossop was the original Glossop. This area in the centre of modern Glossop was a small agricultural settlement that developed as the medieval administrative centre for Glossopdale. Today it is made up of quaint houses and some lovely pubs.
Close to the ‘Dark Peak’ there are some fantastic walks near Glossop. Black Hill, Bleaklow and Kinder Scout being just a few.
Modern Glossop is a bustling town. There are some great boutique independent shops to be found and some wonderful cafes and restaurants.
Of course no description of Glossop is complete without mention of its most famous daughter, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. She was born in nearby Tintwistle in 1941 and sadly passed away in December 2022. There is a mural dedicated to her in the centre of Glossop.
The hearing centre in Glossop was established in 2010 in George St and 5 years ago was moved around the corner to Jacksons Opticians on High St West.
We carry out hearing tests at Jacksons or at the customer’s home. We cover all of Glossop including Hadfield, Padfield Tintwistle and all other surrounding areas.
