HEARING PROTECTION

Jul 13, 2023

Generally people are more aware nowadays that they need to wear hearing protection when working in noise or participating in noisy pastimes ( such as shooting).

Exposure to consistently loud noise ( over 90db) through working in noisy places, such as engineering, military, even dog kennels can lead to permanent high frequency hearing loss. The inner ear hair cells can be damaged and they do not self regenerate. The hair cells that respond to high frequency sounds are exposed due to their positioning at the entrance of the inner ear ( cochlea), so they take the brunt of the sound wave and wear away. This can also cause tinnitus which can be permanent or temporary.

After exposure to a short duration of loud sound ( at a disco or concert) there can be a ringing sensation in the ears. This is tinnitus and is due to the battering the inner ear hair cells have just taken. In most cases this tinnitus is temporary.

Wearing custom made hearing protection which can cost as little as £100 for both ears can certainly stave off life changing high frequency hearing loss and is a cheap solution to prevent a serious problem, Fortunately legislation in recent years has forced employers to provide hearing protection to staff who are exposed to loud sounds and many people engaging in noisy sports or pastimes have also wised up to the benefits of hearing protection.

At the Congleton, Poynton and Glossop Hearing Centres we have for many years provided custom made hearing protection moulds – call us on 0800 458 6726 to find out more.

I went to the hearing centre last week with very badly hardened wax in my left ear. I found them to be extremely helpful and I am grateful for the removal of the wax!

My GP recommended micro suction because of continuous ear infections. I knew of the Congleton branch through them treating my mother in law . I got an appointment within a week and had the procedure today . Quite a lot of "gunk" was sucked out painlessly, in fact it felt quite nice . Hopefully the infections will cease but I wont hesitate going back to the branch if needed or for possible hearing tests in the future . First class service

My 15 year old son was experiencing hearing loss and reoccurring pain in his right ear. I had taken him to the gp several times and was told to use olive oil as all she could view was a big lump of wax. We used olive oil for almost a year which didn't shift the wax and I was at the end of my tether stuck in a position when my son was suffering discomfort and the gp wouldn't do anything to help him. I contacted Congleton Hearing Centre for help and the receptionist kindly listened to my concerns about my son and spoke to the audiologist to see if he would give my son a consultation due to his age (Specsavers do hearing tests and syringing but only see those aged 18+) thankfully the audiologist at Congleton Hearing Centre agreed to see my son the next day 🙂 the receptionist had informed me over the phone that they charge £30 per ear for wax removal which I felt was very reasonable. The gentleman examined both my sons ears and said the left was OK for now and didn't need doing, the right however was completely blocked. He used a suction device which didn't shift the wax as it was well and truly stuck so reverted to using the water syringing technique - a large lump of almost black wax was removed and my sons symptoms had disappeared the following day. I was charged £30 which was money well spent (if Congleton Hearing Centre hadn't agreed to see my son I was going to pay to see an ENT Dr at Nuffield Health). I am so very grateful for all staff at the Hearing Centre - especially the receptionist for getting the after school appointment for my son so quickly and over lockdown. Highly recommend company to others 🙂

Brought my 3yr old for attempted wax removal. Advised beforehand that they would take a look but couldn't guarantee treatment possible. Audiologist was unable to perform the procedure after all but took a long time going over things with us, explained himself clearly & had a great manner. I'd recommend them.
