A new concept in hearing aids has been launched by one of the world leading hearing aid manufacturers, G.N. RESOUND.
This hearing aid is the only type on the market to incorporate the microphone on the receiver piece which fits in the ear.
The effect of this is to dramatically reduce ambient noise such as traffic or the noise of the wind. As a company we are introduced to ‘new’ hearing aid features and concepts all the time and we like to put them to the test. Some deliver and frankly some do not.
We tested the GNR Resound One with the mic in ear aids yesterday by a hearing aid user ( with a moderate loss) trying them whilst holding a conversation near a busy road in Congleton. The improvement was noticeable as the user was not distracted by the loud traffic noise. The harsh metallic sound often produced by traffic being over amplified was simply not there allowing conversation to be heard more distinctly.
When used with the telephone app the aids can also be set to a directional setting meaning all surround sound is cut out allowing conversation to be heard with someone in front even in a very noisy environment.
These aids are excellent for mild to moderate loss but are not really suited for severe losses due to potential feedback as the mic and receiver are so close.
All in all this concept is an exciting breakthrough in the quest to extrapolate speech from background sound.
